How to indentify your target audience

Updated: May 9

In one of our previous blogs, we talked about how you can define your personal brand identity.

When you have identified your personality and passions, you want to know who to connect and discuss it with. Who is the audience you want to talk to, in order to achieve your personal brand goals?

Audience selection

Before you select the audience you want to connect with, you need to know the reason behind your personal brand. Do you want to get noticed more? Do you want to attract more sponsors? Maybe you just want to connect with fans or use your brand to make a difference in the world.

If you know your goal, you can think about who your audience is.

Who are the people you want to reach, in order to achieve that goal? For athletes, an important part of their audience are their fans. As an athlete you want to connect with them, because they witness, follow and share one of your biggest passions.

But are they the only ones? - No.

There are many other people you can interact with. Fans of women's football, or football in general? People who share the same interests and hobbies as you (besides football)? Or people with the same academical interest and experience in order to secure a post-football career?

Your target audience can be different from other athletes. And that is important, because it helps you to create that unique image you are looking for.

Audience Persona's

Once you have a broad idea of who your target audience is, understanding them further will help you to define and create your personal brand messaging. A great way to understand your audience better, is to create audience persona's.

Audience persona's are customer profiles based on market research about the audience. It gives key characteristics about the audience you want to reach and includes information like age, location, occupation, hobbies, interests, ambitions and pain points.

Creating audience persona's will help you understand what they care about, what type of content they might like and where you should deliver that content.

Audience Persona Template

In order to help you, we have created a template to create your audience persona's.

You probably have an audience that consists of more persona's, with their own demographics, interests and values. By filling in the template below, you can specify and understand all the different people you want to connect with. If you want to use and fill in this template, you can download the file added at the bottom of this blog.

Communication to your audience

Knowing your audience helps you to indicate what you want to communicate, but also how and where. Your audience is who you want to interact with and you have to ask yourself the question 'what do they want to see or read?' and 'what is the best way to connect with them?'.

In our next blog, we will talk about the different platforms and which platform works best for your audience.

You can download the Audience Persona Template here:
