The World Cup has come to an end and we exchange international football for club football. All clubs are preparing themselves for the start of the competition and some of them will have to opportunity to play in the Champions League.

The 2023/24 Women's Champions League is the third season of the current format. This includes a home-and-away group stage and two qualification rounds. How does this format look like? And which teams will enter in which stage?

FC Barcelona Women's Champions League

Champions League Procedure

4 teams have qualified directly to the group stage: the UEFA Women's Champions League winner of the previous season (FC Barcelona) and the champions of the three highest ranked associations (France, Germany and Spain). As FC Barcelona is already qualified, the fourth-ranked nation, England, receive an automatic place. This means that Lyon, Bayern and Chelsea all start in the group stage. The remaining 12 spots are decided by two routes: the champions path and league path.

The champions path and league path

The champions path consists of the champions of the associations. The league path consists of the runner-ups and the third-placed teams from the first six associations. The champions path offers 7 group stage places and the league path only 5. Both paths are divided in two rounds.

The six highest ranked associations have three entries. These countries are France, Germany, Spain, England, Sweden and Czechia. The champions enter the champions path in round 2. The runner-up and third will enter the league path, of which the runner-ups will enter in round 2 and the third-placed teams of those six associations in round 1.

The next ten highest-ranked associations have two entries. These countries include Italy, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Austria, Norway, Ukraine and Scotland. The champions will enter the champions path, the runner-ups the league path. They will all enter in round 1.
